Online Business: The Dream vs. The Reality
Starting an online business sounds exciting, liberating, and even glamorous. Everyone wants in, dreaming of financial freedom and the ability to work from anywhere. I’ve built a seven-figure online business—not because I’m a genius or inherited a fortune, but because I learned what works and what doesn’t the hard way.

The lessons I learned could save you years of trial and error. If you’re starting from scratch, how to start an online business, here are 13 things I wish I had known from day one.
1. Fear Will Be Your Constant Companion
Online businesses have serious expectations vs. reality problems.
Social media is full of fake gurus showcasing the perfect entrepreneurial lifestyle—flashy cars, endless vacations, and effortless success. But the reality? Running a business is terrifying.
You’ll face unexpected crises: customer complaints, legal threats, sudden expenses, and logistical nightmares. Any one of these can feel like a business-ending disaster. It’s not an easy ride—but that’s what makes success so rewarding.
2. The First Year Will Test You Like Nothing Else
Many people start an online business part-time, but going full-time is different.
That first year is brutal. You’ll work longer hours for yourself than you ever did for an employer. It’s exhilarating but exhausting. As my friend JK put it:
“I quit working 8 hours a day for someone else so I could work 16 hours a day for myself.”
The good news? It gets better—but only if you push through the grind.
3. You’re a Recruiter, Not Just a Salesperson
Sales skills matter, but the real game-changer? Recruitment.
Even if you’re running a one-person operation, you’ll need to recruit people to support your business—lawyers, web developers, accountants, virtual assistants, and customers.
People don’t work with businesses they think will fail. Your job is to inspire confidence in your vision, making others believe in your success before it even happens.
4. The Scale of the Internet is Insane
At first, it feels impossible to make money online. Then you realize people are making millions in minutes.
The internet rewards obsession + consistency. Stick with it for 12+ months, and you’ll start seeing results. The hardest part? Staying patient long enough to win.
5. The #1 Reason Most People Fail
I spent years dreaming about starting a business. But here’s the truth:
Millions of people fail because they don’t sell what people actually want.
You can either:
✔ Solve a problem
✔ Help people achieve a goal
And those will always tie back to one of these core desires:
- “I want more time.”
- “I want more money.”
- “I want better health.”
- “I want less pain/discomfort.”
- “I want more pleasure/comfort.”
Figure out which desire your business taps into, and you’ll unlock real success.
6. Ask Your Customers, Not “Experts”
New entrepreneurs waste too much time asking for advice from “gurus.” The only opinions that matter are those of your potential customers.
How to do it?
👉 Surveys – I send a simple Google Form to my email list and existing customers every month.
👉 Conversations – Jump on calls with people inside your target market and ask what they truly need.
Stop guessing. Start listening.
7. Your Online Business is a Mini-Nation
One of the best things about running an online business? You make the rules.
For example, in my business:
✅ No unnecessary meetings.
✅ The customer is always right.
✅ No sleazy ads or fake countdown timers.
Think of your business as a tiny country where you decide the laws. The better you run it, the more “citizens” (customers) want to participate.
8. Stop Waiting for the Perfect Plan
If you try to plan everything perfectly, you’ll never start.
What is the best belief you can adopt?
💡 “I’ll figure it out as I go.”
Mistakes teach you more than books ever will.
“Fck around and find out.” – Jack Butcher*
9. You Need to Know Something Valuable
The amount of money you make online is directly tied to how much value you can provide.
Too many people try to sell generic, recycled knowledge. The key to success?
✔ Master a skill over time.
✔ Discover solutions that can’t be Googled.
If you’re not offering unique insight, you’re just adding noise to the internet.
10. Stop Trying to Be an “Expert”
Being an expert isn’t necessary to succeed.
Your best customers are two steps behind you—they need guidance from someone slightly ahead of them. Focus on helping, not proving your credentials.
11. Delegation Feels Like Losing Control—At First
If you do everything yourself, you don’t have a business—you have a job.
To truly scale, you need:
✔ Automation (Zapier, AI tools, etc.)
✔ Virtual assistants (to handle repetitive tasks)
At first, outsourcing feels terrifying—you’re handing someone the keys to your world. But once you get used to it? It feels like freedom.
12. Not All Money is Equal in Online Business
Every dollar you make online isn’t the same.
High-value income =
✔ High margins
✔ Recurring revenue
✔ Recession-proof
Low-value income =
❌ Low margins
❌ One-time purchases
❌ Seasonal revenue
The faster you focus on high-value income, the sooner you’ll reach financial freedom.
13. People Buy Feelings, Not Products
Too many business owners obsess over:
🚫 Fancy websites
🚫 Branding
🚫 Product features
But people don’t buy products—they buy emotions.
What is the most powerful feeling you can create? Inspiration. Make people feel hopeful about their future and be eager to do business with you.
Final Thoughts
Starting an online business is an incredible journey, but it’s not easy. You’ll face fear, long hours, and moments of doubt—but it’s all part of the process.
💡 The key? Stay patient, focus on solving real problems, and keep showing up. The rewards will be worth it.
